Sport and environment together – Sopoti Football Club for a cleaner Shkumbin River!

In Librazhd, football has taken on a new role – not only as a game, but as a platform for environmental protection and educating younger generations. Sopoti Football Club and INCA – Institute for Nature Conservation in Albania signed a cooperation agreement within the framework of the BeMed+ project, turning sport into a catalyst for change.

This partnership aims to reduce the use of single-use plastics in the sports sector, promote sustainable practices, and protect the Shkumbin River. Players, fans, and club staff will engage in trainings and awareness sessions, contribute to river monitoring using the OSPAR methodology, and participate in plastic audits to better understand its impact.

Sports facilities will be equipped with waste separation bins, reusable alternatives will be distributed to players and spectators, and the club will become a model of green sport, sharing its experiences with other clubs across Albania.

The agreement with Sopoti is an important step in showing that sport can be more than just a game – it can be a mission for a cleaner environment, an engaged community, and a sustainable future.
