BeMed+ Albania: Turning Challenges into Change

INCA is leading local efforts under the BeMed+ initiative (Beyond Plastic Med: Commit to a Plastic-Free Mediterranean Sea) to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable solutions in Albania, with a focus on the Shkumbin River watershed. Supported by FFEM and implemented with BeMed, Surfrider Europe, and IUCN, the project empowers fieldwork, community engagement, and innovation—mobilizing NGOs, institutions, and youth volunteers to build a cleaner, more resilient environment.

Despite growing momentum, plastic waste management policies and infrastructure in Albania need strengthening. Public awareness remains limited, and better coordination among government institutions is essential to drive systemic change.

Local stakeholders are rising to the challenge. NGOs, government agencies, and youth volunteers are actively involved in research, consultation, and policy development. Their commitment highlights the power of community-driven action.

• Engaging communities is key to long-term success
• Tools like Plastic Origins enhance monitoring and advocacy
• Strong partnerships across sectors amplify the impact
